Toby is a female Cinnamon Liver shown here at 9 weeks with her loving owner. These photos were sent to me in June of 2000.
Toby's coat color appears to be a mahogany color in this photo. Just like any coat color there are a vast amount of shades relegated by not only the color genes themselves, but modifiers that act upon those genes or in conjunction with them.
Toby's nose leather is clearly visible in this shot. Note the green hued eyes. Most Livers are born with and often keep throughout adulthood green eyes of some varying shade.
Toby at 13 weeks. Even though Toby's toenails look black in this shot they were no doubt a dark Brown as the Liver gene blocks all formation of black pigment from forming on the dog at all. Including eye rims, nose leather, lips, foot pads, and toenails.
Toby at 17 weeks. I lost contact with the owner, would love to see what Toby looked like as a full grown adult. If anyone knows who Toby's owner is please contact me at

6 months old. Although the Liver coat color is a disqualification from the Conformation show ring as it is not allowed within the breed standard, Liver GSD's are quite capable of performing any task or competing in any other event that traditionally colored GSD's can.
Here is a great shot clearly showing the nose leather pigment. It is this feature that seals the deal for the DQ within the show ring. The coat color is listed as a "serious fault" but the nose leather is an automatic DQ.
The red in Toby's coat color really shows in this shot. There is a huge difference between the Cinnamon and Chocolate variations of the Liver coat color and pigmentation. Photo taken at 10 months.
