Kahlua is a Liver female who was abandoned at the Martinez Shelter in California. This photo was taken minutes after we retrieved her from the kennel she spent the night in after being rescued from euthanization at the Martinez Animal Shelter by Lynn K. from the San Francisco German Shepherd Rescue Group. Kahlua was rescued from the shelter on September 1, 2000 at 4:30pm. Her death was scheduled a mere 30 minutes later.
We estimated her age at 2 years at the time. Here she stands after allowing an 8 year old girl to brush the mats out of her fur at the foster home I had driven her to from the kennel I picked her up at. She was extremely freindly and outgoing and didn't even get sick in my Camaro the entire 3+ hour trip! LOL
That is my then quite chunky self standing behind Kahlua outside the kennel I picked her up at. Kahlua was a beautiful dog and I was proud to have been a part of her rescue.

Kahlua is what we refer to as a Cinnamon. This is a variation of the Liver pigmentation. Cinnamon Livers have a distinct red tint to their coat as opposed to the Chocolate variation which is much more of a true dark brown. Naturally the degrees of richness in regards to pigment vary from dog to dog controlled by among other things, modifiers acting upon the color gene itself.
